Blog Post #9

As this class draws to a close I prepare my last required blog entry for the semester, I have learned a great amount of information from this class that I hope to use in other classes and my future career as a high school physics/math teacher as well. We have explored various amounts of technology that can affect education and other aspects that may impact our professional lives as teacher. I have had fun interacting with other students in the classroom and learned different things from their own projects and input that I didn't focus on within my own assignments. I look forward to working with them in other classes and ultimately as peers in the classroom.      I reviewed  The Credibility Challenge  and was able to find a majority of the of the identifiable potential problems in dealing with certain falsies of content or credibility. I was able to discern the difference between the different web address types and varying levels of bias or ...

Fake news isn't necessarily a new subject that's been floating around, especially on the internet. I'm fond of reading satirical articles online from The Onion or military related news subjects on Duffel Blog and sharing them with friends and family when they are appropriate for certain situations. " Some websites were designed to be intentionally misleading. These websites may be parodies, satire, hoaxes, or designed to show students the importance of questioning information found on the web" (Evaluating Internet Resources, n.d.).  I have always been weary of what I read online or through any type of bias media postings, but this weeks readings have reminded myself on how to more thoroughly identify and review potentially troublesome websites. In reviewing a website's credibility I haven't used a specific format in my own personal browsing habits, but I tend to look at the overall look and feel to the information that's being portraye...

I can't say that I've had too much experience in making and editing videos before a recent assignment in class. In preparation to make my video I needed to figure out what I wanted to do, so I did a few things to help me figure out what I wanted to focus on. I reviewed some of my physics equations and wondered which one I could make into a video and create something fun. Saint Martin's University Grand Staircase Lacey, WA      So, once I decided on focusing on kinematics of moving particles I moved onto trying to figure how I wanted to demonstrate the principle. After a walk around campus I had decided on focusing my kinematics demonstration on the grand staircase of Saint Martin's University. We were given an opportunity to checkout cameras from the O'Grady Library on campus, but decided to utilize my own Samsung Gear 360 camera  and record myself working through some problems on a white board.          Once I fo...

As an Android phone and Chromebook user I have been aware of most of Google Drive's capabilities and have been using a number of functions within various classes. One such class was my physics lab class and during those classes I would record data, video, pictures, and other necessary files then later collect and store those files on my Google Drive account. Using sharing methods within Google Drive I was able to then share needed data with my lab partners and we would be individually responsible for determining what we did with the data after that. I would normally use functions within sheets to clean up the data, sort, and add necessary equations to my tables as well. Once I had my necessary data I would then perform my lab write-ups using the Google Docs app and would add in necessary diagrams/pictures and tables from sheets, but there are some downfalls to using Google Sheets for such tasks as well. From what I've found from using Google Sheets and Docs, they're ...

My earliest memories of making my own music through software and technology was through playing a game in my childhood, Mario Paint Composer, on the Super Nintendo. The overall structure to it was pretty simple placing different icons with sounds on the music bar at varying pitches and time intervals and it seemed to be a pretty neat app at the time. People still seem to be using almost the same type of program to create remixes of songs in various forms such as,  Get Lucky - Mario Paint Composer - Daft Punk . This was not my only time making music or editing sound files, in the early 2000's I remember editing music files to create ringtones or other sounds for my Motorola Razer phone when I was in high school. I believe through necessary supports teaching technology and using "technology as a tool" (Querry, 2008), we are able to create more diverse and better learning opportunities for students while adhering to copyright laws.      As instruct...

In my own personal philosophy, I try to refrain from engaging in viral posts that relate to religion, political, or otherwise may not come from a reliable source. I have seen many different articles or otherwise garbage "news" that someone has posted online to try to sway peoples opinions in an attempt to make an idea or or message go viral. I've seen different types of attempted media and more recently with the developments of certain software someone's face has been superimposed on another video and attempts to portray someone falsely with a certain message content or other bias agenda in an attempt to anger or scare viewers.       As a parent, I find certain stories that affect young children and other kids put into harms way very heartbreaking. "Similarly, the superhero funeral epitomizes the senseless of much of the violence in the U.S. " (Davis, 2016). I never like to hear what the effects of one person has caused onto a defenseless child,...

iPod (6th gen) (left) & iPod (5th gen) (right): showing the updated view feature (Vernon, 2007). I remember owning a 5th generation iPod Video in high school, 2005, and listening to various music content, podcasts, watching music videos, and other basic applications; but I never thought about using it for educational purposes. "Almost instantly, students figured out how that they could also record lectures on their iPods and listen at their leisure " (Davidson, 2011). It's amazing how far mobile technology has come to assist with various applications, especially education. I have also recommended a phone application to a peer of mine to help with studying chemistry acids to include: naming, spelling, identifying compounds, and such as an alternative to traditional flashcards.  I believe technology has various applications in learning at various levels of thought processes and understanding. As mentioned in,  The Art & Science of Introducing New Content. (n...

I find it interesting how technology is being integrated into the classroom and partnered with certain strategies it can enhance the learning through various researched and applied methods. As a future math/physics teacher I hope to be able to understand how to implement and critique my own use of technology. Through the use of the Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition (SAMR) Model, I would like to be help students enjoy mathematical concepts, on various devices and applications, through interactive learning and games. I don't think I would be able to fully allow for a complete implementation of the entire process but I believe, "A continual re-examination of practice to make the best possible use of technology" (Puentedura, 2016), is essential in today's classroom. I look forward and the possibility of restructuring math problems, through the use of technology, to present on an almost individual basis if I can.      I understand...
